The little book I was trying to remember is called The Elements of E-Mail
Style, by David Angell and Brent Heslop. Boston, Addison, 1994. It has a
three or four-page discussion of the "smileys" or emoticons--and gives advice
on how/when/where to use them!
p.s. does anyone have a source for statistics on the growth of numbers of
writing centers in universities in north america? Say for the last 30 years??
If so, I'd really like to have it.
