Marcy, did you ever take this student aside and explain to him that his views were not acceptable indeed illegal if acted upon in contemporary North American or western society? (This is not the case with your anti-gun-control student). I have done that myself in a similar situation; but then I was not born here and am married to some-one from the so-called Third World, so have some experience navigating - not always successfully - cultural divides.
