Doug, My initial reaction was to go looking for Halliday and Hasan's Cohesion in English, but I don't have that. But I do have a book called Discourse Analysis by Gillian Brown and George Yule (Cambridge UP, 1983). It gives an organized overview of the kind of things you mentioned: topic, theme, given/new, coherence, and reference. It is a step up the food chain from Williams' Style: Toward Clarity and Grace but not absolutely impenetrable. Good luck! Roger Graves
