Thanks to Barb Mallut and "Zippo" (MaryAnn) who responded so promptly and helpfully to our request for advice about survuving hernia surgery. I have some additional questions that they--or someone else--may be able to address: Peter's great concern is mobility after the surgery, as well as what will happen in the period pre-op when he must be off his meds. He takes Sinemet CR every 4 hrs,and one (if he can remember it) in the middle of the night. Also Prozac and Proscar (for bladder). When he forgets the mid-night Scr, he gets pretty stiff, and needs help getting out of bed. He sets an alarm every couple of hours at night, to go to the bathroom, and because of my hearing problem, I don't always wake up--but he likes to be as independant as possible, anyway. Would it be reasonable to ask if he could be admitted to the hospital the day BEFORE surgery, to deal with the mobility problem ? I'm thinking it would be really hard to get him there when he's off meds. MaryAnn suggested a longer stay post-op would be helpful, too. Just over- night seems to be the USUAL for herniorraphy these days. What kinds of aids should we arrange ahead of time--such as bedside commode, walker, etc? Maybe even wheelchair? I want to prepare as well as possible, for both our sakes and to relieve his considerable anxiety. The 2 messages we received so far were reassuring, and much appreciated. This list is a real treasure! Camilla Flintermann(C)and Peter(P-76-6)
