I don't know much about this, but there are tutorials posted for anonymous FTP at: ftp://cs.bu.edu/irc/support/ The two client programs for the Mac that I am aware of are called Ircle and Homer. Homer seems to be the more popular. You could probably use Netscape to find its home on the Internet.
