For those members interested in progress on the scientific front in PD, and not familiar with the United Parkinson Foundation, the 4th quarterly newsletter is packed (24 pages) with reviews of conferences, meetings, and lay-oriented symposia. Be warned, this is "mainstream" science, reported by well-known and established researchers. You won't find anything about NADH, DHEA, melatonin, fava beans, etc., but you will see the very latest about etiology (heredity and environment), surgery (all kinds), controlled clinical trials, and new drugs (e.g., cabergoline, rasagiline). The latter, like Eldepryl, is an effective MAO-B inhibitor, but without the harmful metabolites. UPF is partly supported by a national drug distributor, Athena Pharma- ceuticals, and makes grants to qualified research projects. They ask a modest contribution, but for patients or caregivers who can't afford it, subscription is free.
