Dear CASLL members, Here's a call for advice (and a question about e-literacy). Several of us as UCC have been asked to investigate possibilities for establishing a website devoted to the study of B.C. writers. The idea is that we create an online archive, with such holdings as ms. drafts, photographs, reviews, hypertext versions of key works, interviews, bibliographies, letters, etc. We want to begin with a focus on Earle Birney (who, among other things, helped set up Canada's first Department of Creative Writing--at UBC). We hope to make the site accessible to users from school to university: in addition to the primary materials, we'll be including curriculum guides & "guided tours" appropriate for various grade levels. The concept is an exciting one, but I am running into difficulties re: (1) copyright permission to reproduce some of Birney's poems and (2) cooperation from the Special Collections divisions of those libraries holding the Birney fonds. The basic problem seems to be that the publishers and libraries have no clear policy regarding "publishing" on the Net. Have any of you run into similar problems? Do you have suggestions re: the project itself? Might you wish to contribute (commentaries on Birney? your personal copies of his ms. drafts not yet collected by U of T, UBC, and U of Calgary? or might you encourage your students to contribute research-based materials/essays/or whatever?)? Any advice or input you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Regards, Will ___________ +-----------------------------| _._._ ._ |-------------------------------+ | W.F.
