It is my understanding that electical stimulation of the globus pallidus is used to knock out the activity of neurons in that region without destroying them. Low levels of stimulation increase the rate of neuronal firing, but higher levels overload the cells to the point that they can no longer fire. This decreases the overactivity in the region which is associated with tremor and dyskinesia in PD. Hopefully no long term damage is done in the process and treatment can be modulated to correspond to symptoms.
