Following is info. I received re: the virus issue raised by Delana: ------------------------------------------- (1) I am writing to you on behalf of America Online to answer your recent question about AOL GOLD. All of the software available online is thoroughly and regularly checked and verified to be virus-free before our members have access to it in any way. There has never been a report of anyone receiving a virus from any of the America Online software libraries. Bear in mind, though, that files you access via FTP from the internet are not virus-checked by America Online. Also, be cautious when downloading attached files from e-mail as we are unable to check these files as well. Be sure you know the member who sent it to you and don't just download anything that appears in your mail box. In fact, should you receive unsolicited e-mail with an attached file that you are not sure of, please use the "Forward" button and send it to screen name "TOSEmail1" for investigation. -------------------------------------------- (2) I am writing to you on behalf of America Online to answer your recent question about downloading email automatically. We recommend that ANY EMAIL YOU RECEIVE WITH THE AOLGOLD.ZIP FILE ATTACHED BE FORWARDED TO THE TERMS OF SERVICE DEPARTMENTby selecting the Forward button on your email list window and send to SCREEN NAME "TOSEMAIL1", THEN IMMEDIATELY DELETE FROM YOUR "MAIL YOU'VE SENT" AND "MAIL YOU'VE READ" MAILBOXES by selecting the "delete" button on your email list window. ************************* DO NOT DOWNLOAD !!!!******************************* The AOLGOLD virus is a trojan that is intended to erase most of your system files. America Online's Terms of Service Department tested and verified it's capabilities, after a member who had received it reported it to us. AOLGOLD.ZIP contains an install file, INSTALL.EXE, which when run, expands into the following: ADRIVE.RPT ANNOY.COM DOER.DO DOOMDAY.EXE INSTALL.BAT INSTALL.EXE SLOWER.ZZ SUSPEND.DRV VIDEO.DRV When INSTALL.BAT is initialized (by rebooting your computer) it renames VIDEO.DRV to VIRUS.BAT. The next time the computer is rebooted, VIRUS.BAT begins it's job of deleting all files on the computer's C:/ drive, in alphabetical and numerical order. Please refer to Keyword VIRUS for the latest updates. Thank you for using America Online. We hope you enjoy our service. Merry Christmas and God Bless! KSpargurEM Technical Support Representative
