Hi,

Three items in one mail, for your reading pleasure:
        - CD ROMs of PD information - anyone interested?
        - A paper on PD and the Internet
        - Did anyone know about the Alzheimer's Disease Support Center?

CD ROMs of PD information
=========================

There is a growing body of material about PD now available on the Internet,
generally via the Web or gopher. Unfortunately, not everone can get access
to it - either for technical or cost reasons.

If I could download all the PD stuff onto a CD ROM, would anyone be
interested? This could be used by people who don't have an Internet
connection, or who were worried about their phone bills.

Its technically feasible, the issues are:
        - how many people would be interested?
        - how to organise the making and distribution of the CD ROM?
        - I am assuming that people running PD related web sites have no
          objection to their sites being included on the CD.

If you think you might be interested (this isn't a commitment, just
wondering about demand), please mail and let me know - DON'T REPLY TO THIS
MESSAGE, create a new one addressed to:

I would guess (an it is only a guess) that the CD would cost between $20
and $50 - it's not something I intend to make a profit on. Things would be
a lot easier if someone in the US was able to fulfill domestic orders.

I should be able to provide this information on a ZIP disk on a one-off
basis if anyone has a pressing need.

PD and the Internet
===================

On a sort of related issue, I wrote a paper on how the Internet etc. can
help PD, epecially in the UK & Europe - although the concepts are probably
valid for elsewhere. You can find it on the web at

                http://www.nipltd.com/Simon/internetpaper/

It is also available as a Microsoft Word RTF file.

I would appreciate any comments people have.

Alzheimer's Disease Support Center
==================================

By the way, did anyone notice that the Alzheimer's Disease Support Center (ADSC)
on the Cleveland Free-Net won an award for its use of the (US) National
Information Infrastructure? More information can be found on the web at
         http://www.gii-awards.com/nicampgn/2b2a.htm

This is the summary of that page:
NB - ADRD = Alzheimer's disease or related dementias
---- [snip]
The information and support needs of persons dealing with ADRD are well
documented. The ADSC is a free, 24-hour, telecomputing project designed to
provide information and support to families, health and social service
professionals, and others helping to care for someone with ADRD. Users
gather information and communicate at their convenience, and get responses
tailored to their specific needs. Both public and anonymous communication
are supported. As system postings show, the ADSC has demonstrated capacity
to provide relevant information and support to users. Users have become a
cohesive
group who identify themselves as a "computer family."
