Hi and Happy Holidays to all, I also wanted to introduce myself and my father to the group (in addition to doing the same to Barbara patterson, the listserv owner). ----- Begin Included Message ----- >From [log in to unmask] Mon Dec 18 10:30:19 1995 To: [log in to unmask] Subject: Re: Welcome (I need some info/help) Cc: [log in to unmask], [log in to unmask] Content-Length: 3063 X-Lines: 73 > From [log in to unmask] Fri Dec 15 20:08:52 1995 > To: [log in to unmask] > Subject: Welcome > Mime-Version: 1.0 > Content-Type> : > TEXT/PLAIN> ; > charset=US-ASCII> > Content-Length: 4635 > X-Lines: 132 > > Dear Naren: > > > Welcome to the PARKINSN list. I am a Electrical/Computer Engineer working in the Silicon Valley, my father was very recently diagnosed with Parkinson's D. in Bombay, India. Being a very health oriented person who walks 1 hr every day, he is devastated by the diagnosis. So is the family. He also has high blood pressure and anxiety problems that only worsen the situation. I have recently been searching the net and have found a lot of informative data about PD and that is how I found out about your archives and email list. My Dad is currently with me on a month's vacation. He still works in India as a consultant in the Liqueified Petroleum Gas arena. He has worked in this field all his life for Shell Oil till he retired from that company 3 years back. I wonder if it was early life exposure to various LPG products and supporting chemicals that slowly degraded his nervous system. I read somewhere that "hexane" and similar chemicals can damage the central nervous system. Anyway, I am really looking for a place that can help my Dad and family cope with his PD. He is still uncertain how soon it will degrade and often begins to attribute all aches and pains and stiff neck and shoulder to PD (his doctor says that it is "Spondilitis" (spelling ?)) and begins to feel that his condition may be worsening. Where DO I TAKE HIM for some sort of counselling ? The Dr. William Langston Parkinson's Institute is in Sunnyvale, California. I thought I should take him there for a second diagnosis/opinion, but, however this will not serve the real goal on soothing his nervousness. They will talk to him for 2.5 hrs and I guess re-evaluate him and his current medication. I am looking for some support/counselling organization/person that can help both him and us deal with his present/future in terms of both progress of PD and progress of the research on new drugs and a possible cure (?). Also, he too wants to keep up to date on new developments and stay informed on PD and active research. However, he has no computer in Bombay and no access to email. He sent a letter to a center in Newport Beach (Southern California) but never received any of their monthly publications or even a reply from them. Is there any center/group that he can register at to receive this kind of information through regular mail. Thanks a lot in advance, Folks. Have a wonderful Christmas, Hannukah and hope the next year brings you happiness, health and prosperity and new cures for all! Naren Prabhu Quickturn Design Systems, Inc. 440 Clyde Av.
