I was diagnosed with PD ten years ago, and I've been on Sinemet for 8 or 9
years. (currently I take 1/2 Sinemet 25/100 every 3 hours; also parlodel and
eldepryl. ) For the last 2-3 years the side-effects were very
bad--especially a dyskinesia I can only describe as writhing or squirming. I
tried most of the usual drugs in various combinations, but nothing was
working. On. Nov. 1, on my neurologist's recommendation, I had a right
pallidotomy, with, I think, excellent results. The dyskinesias are gone. I
still have occasional tremor, also difficulty in turning over in bed,,
occasional drooling. But I've regained weight and all sorts of
skills--zippers, shoelaces, panty-hose putting on, writing, typing, etc. I
feel like a semi-normal person again.
I am considering writing about my pallidotomy at some point--after
it's had more time to prove itself. I am interested in others' experiences
with the surgery, as patients or doctors. I also would like to access the
archives on it. I would also like to hear more about thalamic stimulation
and related procedures.
---------- It seems to me that most members of this group continue to
regard Sinemet as a wonder drug. It's my feeling that it should be used
only when other drugs no longer are effective--since the honeymoon is
limited. --Nina [[log in to unmask]].
