I think you need to change the terms of the discussion. Go into a Business CD data base and using the key word "communication" look for what business leaders say about the necessity of effective communication skill. Start linking your defence to those skills. Nay go on the attack and start asking the economist what she is doing to help develop those essential "portable" skills. Also how come other disciplines never have to defend their outcomes. Do the economists have an outcome test to measure how well they taught their students? I find it hard to believe an economist with any links to industry would make such a thoughtless comment. You are free to email this comment on to other people in your university.
