The only thing I'd add is that most of this stuff was created by people in their "spare" time and given away. Most of the time it was written for them and their friends to use, and non-techie people weren't considered. This "Gift culture" has allowed the Internet to grow exponentially and also remain available to the home user. Unfortunately it does mean you all have to become techies to use the stuff. You can buy really nice list server, or get someone to write/modify one for you. But I bet you don't want to pay the price :-) Having said that, yes the computer industry is guilty of many sins, particularly in its attitude to end users.
