Those who live in cities will generally have an easier time finding a location to view the "Taking Control of Parkinson's Disease" Second National Satellite Symposium. Typical sites in those locations are hospitals that have a movement disorders clinic or department and maintain support groups for their patients. Many hospitals have satellite TV departments that provide satellite hookup for training and seminars. The downside to this is, many have fixed dishes pointing to a particular satellite which may not be Telstar 401 C band or Galaxy 7 Ku band. C Band and Ku in satellite terms are like VHF and UHF on your TV. Your TV has two tuners combined into one to receive both. Commercial satellite systems are EITHER C band or Ku band capable...not both. If the hospital has a movable dish, it can be remotely moved to the correct satellite depending on the satellite receivers capability...C band or Ku band. What other options are available for me or my group to receive the symposium? COUNTY EXTENSION AGENTS Many counties, provinces, parishes, have agricultural extension agents. Most times this organization permits access to their buildings and satellite facilities to local groups such as yours. Call them and set up your meeting. NEW CAR DEALERSHIPS Look at your local new car dealership. If they have a small satellite dish on their roof call the General Manager of the dealership. The General Manager rather than the other managers oversees the 'big picture' of the dealership. Most new auto dealers that have the small dish subscribe to ASTN which is the Automotive Sales Training Network. This dish is pointed to Galaxy 7 Ku...the same satellite that the Symposium will be on. Ask if it would be possible for your group of XX members to use the dealership training room on March 7th, a Thursday, so that you could view the Parkinson's Symposium. Dealers spend thousands of dollars to bring in one customer, you are offering to bring up to XX members to view the symposium. Most training rooms will hold 10 to 15 persons with ready access to coffee and vending machines. Some could be obliged to include a mention in their ads that the Symposium will be available at their dealership as a public service. WE ARE CONSUMERS! HOME SATELLITE DISH Within your group, inquire who has a satellite dish and if they have a large living room. Almost all home satellite systems can receive Telstar 401 C band channel 17 which among other things carries ABC and Fox network feeds. CABLE COMPANIES Most community cable companies have conference rooms and capability for Ku and C band. This is an opportunity for them to perform a public service and also help with the advertising with onscreen notices of the Symposium throughout the system. ABC, FOX AND PBS NETWORK AFFILIATES When you tune in a ABC, Fox or PBS network program you are watching Telstar 401 whether you know it or not. The TV station is receiving that signal through their dish which is pointed at Telstar 401. Television stations have studios which they make available to groups as a public service and provide announcements of the Symposium as well. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE TOPICS WHICH WILL BE COVERED IN THE SYMPOSIUM? The presentations will include: New Frontiers in Science New Frontiers in Treatment Living with PD: Pharmacologic, Lifestyle Approaches Surgical Options: A Look at Pallidotomy and Transplantion WHAT IF MY GROUP HAS A QUESTION? An 800 number will be displayed on the screen that will accept questions for the presenters. Since response time in answering questions is limited, don't delay calling in your questions. WHAT KIND OF MEETING FORMAT WILL THE LARGER SITES BE USING? Once you have selected a site, call Juliet Johnson at (212) 880-5336 for your meeting booklet which will give you the tools to have an excellent meeting. Juliet Johnson and Sandra Perez work for an agency that is promoting this event and provide liason between the different organizations. Once your site is listed in their database, all of the national organizations know where to refer callers from your geographical area. Medicines and Seating Encourage those attending to bring their medications and take them as scheduled. Allow plenty of space for those who may become dyskinetic at the 'end' of their dose to be able to get up and walk around as necessary. 'Dry' presentations provide an excellent opportunity to take medications and rest room breaks...:) Don't be surprised if some of what you hear, you have read about on the parkinsn list.
