     >Anyway, my main question is why this group is a mailing list rather

I think the suggestion for getting this list registered as a newsgroup
or "usenet" is an excellent idea and long overdue. The traffic within
this group as well as the importance of it to so many of us more than
warrants this being done. Don't think this would change how you get
your messages because it won't. You can still be subscribed and
continue getting messages into your mailbox but what it does for
people who get "overwhelmed" with the messages is that it allows them
to be unsubscribed (no mail) but still be able to read and peruse all
of the messages at their convenience. I am preparing my father's
computer (diagnosed 4+ years) to be connected to the net but I am
reluctant to get him into the list immediately because of the
incredible volume of messages. He would be overwhelmed to say the
     least.

I hope this can be done.
