Although we do not yet have an official policy, we have a "working policy" on this. First, the student is encouraged to approach the prof and ask for the special accommodations (e.g., extra time on the exam). If, however, the student is reluctant for some reason, the Disabilities coordinator will help out. It is technically up to the prof whether or not to grant the accommodations. The prof is speaking on behalf of the university, and the University is accountable to the Human Rights legislation. As far as the place and supervision for exam writing, it is up in the air. Because the University has no special area and has made no special arrangements for supervision, the profs assume the Learning Skills Centre will do it all. Occasionally the LSC will supervise an exam (one person there likes to do this kind of thing), but then the student usually tries to write amid chaos. My position is that profs are responsible for preparing, giving, and marking exams. I hope this helps. Jim Bell Ph. When these students have special compensations, for example, extra time and use of a computer, what have you set up regarding -application to prof? -place to take test, exam? -invigilation of exam?
