At a symposium on 'In Vivo Analytical Chemistry', Prof. R.M. Wightman and co-workers presented investigations at the University of North Carolina on developing in vivo analytical techniques for detecting release of the neurotransmitter dopamine in synapses - the approximately 100-nm spaces between neurons where nerve signals are transmitted between cells. Wightman has collaborated on other investigations involving dopamine and the dopamine transporter gene. (C&E News, p. 35,18 March 1996)
