The log files are usually pretty large, I believe covering one weeks worth of posts to the list, and newcomers wanting to know what has been written to the list in the past about pallidotomies, for example, would have to read through all the past messages to find them. I found the search tools extremely useful and hope they will return quickly. As others have mentioned, those 1% or so of us who use the database functions often run searches for other people, on and off the net, as well. One series of messages I keep handy to mail to the 2-3 people who request this type of information each week is the "Algorithm for the Management of Parkinson's Desease" which is a pretty thorough discussion of medications and other treatments for PD.
