> I was also informed that there is >a research study at NIH that is in need of subjects for such a study. I >haven't tried it yet, but an address similar to this should get you on the >WWW at NIH. (httn://www.nih.gov). Then just work your way down until you >find what you are looking for. I believe the researcher is a neurologist >named Dr. John Fahn(sp). The Experimental Therapeutics Branch is conducting a study examining the effects of Estradiol on Parkinson's disease. I cut the following information out of our web site: Postmenopausal (or post-hysterectomy) female patients with Parkinson's disease are invited to test the short term motor effects of Estradiol, a major estrogen hormone secreted by the body. The study will evaluate the ability of this hormone, administered with skin patches, to modify the symptoms of Parkinson's disease and its complications. Healthy candidates must provide documentation of a full and satisfactory gynecologic examination obtained in the last 9 months, as well as the results of a Pap smear and mammogram. Candidates will be requested to stop temporarily their regular hormonal replacement therapy and perhaps some of their antiparkinsonian medications before study entry. Hormonal status and safety concerns during the study will be addressed through blood tests. The study requires a few visits to the NIH Outpatient Department Clinic and two short inpatient admissions to the NIH Clinical Center. The study is conducted over six weeks and though placebo-controlled, all patients will receive the active hormone drug treatment. Drs. John Fang and Pierre Blanchet are supervising the study. We are also conducting studies which examine the effects of novel medications on motor fluctuations (on-off, wearing off, etc.) Our Web Site is: http://www.nih.gov/ninds/neurosci/clinical/etb/etbproto.htm If you have any questions, please fell free to email me directly.
