I want to express my sympathy to all the denizens of CASLL who didn't
get to Hecla Island last weekend (even though Lake Winnipeg was
frozen as far as the eye could see, and the hiking trails often
presented three-foot deep drifts to negotiate). Sorry, folks, you
missed a good one. And we missed you.
One of the recurrent themes of the conference was the invasion of
cyberspace, or maybe our move toward cyberspace. I'm hoping we can
find a way to get as much as possible of Inkshed 13 online one way or
another -- for instance, by getting manuscripts into electronic form
and onto the Web, so we can create links to them from Mary-Louise's
Inkshed home page. This would mean that people who weren't able to
be there would be able to get some notion of some of the interesting
ideas that were circulating around.
Unfortunately, we can't get talent night online in any way I can
imagine (anybody think of any way we can digitize that
dissertation-writing rabbit, or Sandy's wonderful flat-picking, or
the body-language "MANITOdA"?) Well, maybe there are some photos we
can scan in (I certainly remember flash cameras going off at some
crucial moments).
Anyway, this is, among other things (the other things include an
expression of gratitude to Sandy and Pat and all the Manitoda mafia
who organized the conference ), an invitation to anyone who has an
electronic version of her presentation to let me know. I'm happy to
try to facilitate making it available in one way or another.
And in the long tradition of "I'll show you mine if you'll show me
yours" I've put mine on my Web site. I think as soon as possible it
should be linked to the Inkshed site, but right now you can get to it
either through my home page (URL below) or by pointing whatever Web
browser you have at this address:

It's called "Affordances and Constraints of Electronic Discussions,"
if I remember right.
If you don't have access to the Web, let me know and I'll send you
the draft of my presentation as a file in whatever form is
convenient. You won't be able to participate in the Electronic
Discussion I've attached to it that way, but if anyone who's
interested and doesn't have access to a program like Lynx, Netscape,
Web Explorer would let me know I'll surely try to work some other
strategy out. Let me know.
And in other news, Inkshed 14 will be somewhere within two hours'
drive of The Big Maple, on the same weekend (May 1-4, 1997, I
believe) and is being organized by an international and
multiprovincial consortium / task force composed of Marcy Bauman,
Mary-Louise Craven, Roger Graves, Andrea Lunsford, Margaret Procter,
and me. We expect to be informing and consulting as widely as
possible, on the CASLL list and in other media, as we work out the
shape and details of next year's conference. We hope we can maintain
the standard set by Pat, Sandy, et al. -- but without the ice.
