In the recent Johns Hopkins Medical Letter HEALTH AFTER 50 (VOL8, N 4, jUNE,1996) there is an article entitled "Important Tips for Surviving Summer's Heat." It observes that normal aging reduces the effectiveness of the body's ability to regulate blood temperature. Heat waves generally increase the number of deaths from heart disease and other heat-sensitive conditions. Of significance to PD patients the article states "By hindering sweat production and blood flow, some medications (notably antihistamines, beta-blockers, calcium channel blockers, anticholinergics, antidepressants, anti-Parkinson's drugs, and diuretics) can also affect the body's ability to cope with heat." It is suggested that protective steps against heat related illness are: drink more water, use air conditioning, cut back on physical activity, do not rely on fans, take baths and showers, wear appropriate apparel, eat light, and talk to your doctor about your medications and dosages. -------------------- Sid Roberts 66/dx2 [log in to unmask] Youngstown, Ohio
