To Barbara Quackenbush: According to my info (which may be somewhat
out of date) it looks as if your husband has Shy-Drager Syndrome, which
is one of a family of PD variants called Multiple-System Atrophy
(referring to parts of the brain). Unlike PD, SDS affects principally
the autonomic functions, including regulation of blood pressure. Failure
of that function is the cause of orthostatic hypotension or syncope.
Unfortunately, dopaminergic medication for the primary symptoms of PD
may worsen the symptoms of orthostatic hypotension. There is treatment
in the form of both drugs and physical measures, such as elastic hose,
for the hypotension, which you should expect from your neuro. Good luck!
Cheers,
Joe
