Hello, All: Received a reply from Sen.Connie Mack(FL) which is a big event in my life since, 1) I am not from Florida and 2) this is the second response I've EVER received from the MANY letters I wrote! He writes, " I believe investment in medical research is one of the most effective ways to reduce long term health care costs. To this end, any health care reform legislation considered by Congress should not only improve the accessibility and efficiency of health care services , but should also maintain America's commitment to developing innovative procedures and treatments." He continues to say that he, along with members of his family, would not be alive today were it not for cancer research. While he does not say that he will co-sponsor, he does say " you can count on my continued commitment to support the vital role of medical research ..." I sent a copy of this memo to PAN and Mike Claeys wrote back encouraging contact with Sen. Mack as the feeling is that he is "ready" to be convinced. So, please write, call, etc. Sen. Connie Mack (R.FL) fax:202-224-8022, phone:202-224-5274, email:[log in to unmask] The other piece of news is a BUMMER: Senator Hatfield's office informed PAN that the hearing (Joan Samuelson was to testify) scheduled for Wednesday has been postponed so that the Senate Republicans can hold a vote to elect their new Majority Leader. Hopefully, the hearing will be rescheduled soon. Perhaps we need to nag somebody to reschedule the hearing!? Regards, Margaret Tuchman
