Following is Senator Baucus' response to my E-mailed request for his cosignature on the "Udall Bill". The sense of urgency for passage of the bill stimulates my appreciation for the prompt and sensitive response I received from Senator Baucus'. Our representatives for the Parkinsons Community will visit with him soon. I hope the meeting goes well. My Legislative Assistant for health issues will be meeting with some advocates of Parkinson's research next week, so she can advise me of the situation. If I have any more questions at that point, I may contact you. As a rule of thumb, I only cosponsor bills that are referred to Committees of which I am a member, or those which have been reported out of Committee and await action by the Senate. This is a cautious practice, because bills are often changed dramatically during Committee consideration -- I don't want to buy a pig in a poke. The Udall bill has been referred to the Labor and Human Resources Committee, of which I am not a member. I look forward to seeing how it emerges from Committee, or whether it gets picked up in whole or in part during the budget process this year. Until then, please know that I understand how important this is to you and the families of other Parkinson's sufferers. I recall very well Mo Udall's struggle with Parkinson's, and I am still touched by his invicible good humor in the face of it. As I wrote to Margaret, I was raised to believe we have a humane obligation to alleviate suffering. I support vigorous health research, in the private sector as well as with federal participation. I understand you feel we need to make Parkinson's and neurological disorders a higher priority. ______________________________ Reply Separator _________________________________ Subject: Please cosign the "Udall Bill" Author: [log in to unmask] at Internet Date: 6/12/96 1:13 PM Received: by ccmail from mailhost.senate.gov >From @gateway.senate.gov:[log in to unmask] X-Envelope-From: @gateway.senate.gov:[log in to unmask] Received: from gateway.senate.gov by mailhost.senate.gov id aa29104; 12 Jun 96 13:12 EDT Received: from emout13.mx.aol.com by gateway.senate.gov; (5.65v3.0/1.1.8.2/14Sep94-0947PM) id AA04187; Wed, 12 Jun 1996 13:18:24 -0400 Received: by emout13.mail.aol.com (8.6.12/8.6.12) id NAA05566; Wed, 12 Jun 1996 13:12:30 -0400 Date: Wed, 12 Jun 1996 13:12:30 -0400 From: [log in to unmask] Message-Id: <[log in to unmask]> To: [log in to unmask] Cc: [log in to unmask], [log in to unmask], [log in to unmask], [log in to unmask], [log in to unmask], [log in to unmask], [log in to unmask] Subject: Please cosign the "Udall Bill" Dae: June 12, 1996 To: Senator Max Baucus From: Maryhelen Davila Volunteer Parkinsons Community Phoenix Arizona E-Mail address [log in to unmask] Purpose: Request for Senator Baucus ' cosignature on the "Morris K. Udall Parkinsons Research and Education Act S684 ("Udall Bill"). Timing/Prioriiy: This is time sensitive. Your rresponse is considered very important to our nation's Parkinsons Communitiy . . Background: My friend Margaret Tuchman, one of our country's Parkinson's Connunity has shared your letter with us. Your E-mail letter responded to her request for your support on the above captioned bill. Discussion: One and one-half milllion Americans are affected by Parkinsons Disease. We appreciate the support you express in your response to Margaret. Please make your support helpful to us by agreeing to co-sign the "Udall Bill". In your June 11, 1996 letter to Margaret, you wrote: "Thanks for your note, Margaret. I have always supported a vigorous federal health research program, and I also want to be sure we offer the right incentives to the private sector to conduct health research. This is much more than just an investment in productivity -- it is our humane obligation to alleviate suffering. I'll keep in mind your support for the Udall bill." Senator Baucus, because your lletter is so ecouraging, I will forward a copy of this note to Margaret, to our friends in Arizona, and to the members of this worldwide computor list. Your decision to cosign the "Udall Bill" is of great importance to all of us in this country and to those worldwide - so many whose lives, like mine, are being crushed by this relentless sufferring of Parkinsons and Related Neurological Disorders. We wish no one had to suffer any catastrophic disease such as Parkinsons or Cancer. We appreciate your understanding of how so many victims hope hangs on federal research funding. Can you feel as our familiies do as they helplessly watch our struggle and see the disparate treatment we are subjected to when we compare the impact of Parkinsons Disease and it's hstory of federal funding to the federal support given to other diseases? Parkinsons Research gets $26 per patiient per year. That barely covers one day of some of our medications. We are happy to aswer every question you may have, because we are confident you will support the bill if you are fully informed of the very beneficial impact your decision can have on so many.
