STAGES of PD--Hoenh and Yarh classification : (I'm posting this to the list, as there have been several queries) Stage 1= Mild one-sided tremor or rigidity--with or without slowness of movement. May not need treatment. Stage 2= Moderate tremor or rigidity on both sides, with bradykinesia. Symptoms will be improved with amantadine, levadopa, or a dopamine agonist. Stage 3= Significant tremor, rigidity, amd/or bradykinesia, accompanied by mobility problems. Difficulties in postural control develop;there is unsteadiness on turns, and hesitations, halts and freezes when start- ing to walk. Patients begin to notice fluctuations in their level of function during a day, and may experience dyskinesias. Major new prob- lem is balance difficulty. Stage 4= More severe disability, but still mobile and able to function inde- pendently. Bradykinesia more severe. If fluctuations are present, they will also be more severe. Stage 5= Loss of ability to function independently. Postural defects severe,in- dependent mobility impossible. NOTE: Persons with severe mobility fluctuations may vary between stages 1 and 5
