For newcomers to the list since the last PDF posting re pallidotomy, please be advised that palllidotomy is not for everyone. It is chiefly helpful for patients experiencing dyskinesias as a response to Sinemet. It alleviates this problem, allowing the patient to take more Sinemet, so other symptoms may also be improved. Further, please note that many centers are setting up pallidotomy programs. The PDF advises patients to seek the advice of their movement disorder (Parkinson) neurologist. Careful selection of patients is vitally important. If you are not being treated by a Parkinson specialist, call the PDF for referral to such a specialist. 800/457-6676 9am to 5pm eastern time Monday through Friday. The PDF can refer you to a good Parkinson specialist, and also to those centers offering pallidotomies which have a Parkinson specialist overseeing the programs. Otherwise post operative care may not be appropriate.
