The House is scheduled to vote today on the Health and Human
Services 1997 appropriations. Included in this bill is the
recommendation for NIH, providing an increase of $819.6 million (6.9%)
above last year's level which would bring NIH's overall budget to
$12.747 billion. The funding approved by the Committee is $341
million more than the president requested. Included in this amount is
$90 million toward the new NIH clinical center which is expected to
cost $310 million.

Included in this $12.7 billion is the funding for NINDS (National
Institute for Neurological Disorders and Stroke)which is where
Parkinson's research is done. It is important that this legislation
pass with at least these increases. Please consider contacting
your Congressman and urging his support of this bill. Before we can
obtain the significant increases in Parkinson's research called for
in the Udall Bill we must assure current funding levels.
