When a group of us are walking around the House and Senate office buildings
like we were again this week, people often ask us, "What's PD?" After
we give them the answer, mention the Udall bill, and get in whatever
other plugs we can depending on how quickly they are trying to get away
from us. But our next question is, "What did _you_ think it meant?"

Here are some frequent or favorite alternative interpretations, feel free
to add your own suggestions:

1. No Police Department (far and away the top response)

2. No Plain Dealer (We do give buttons to Cleveland residents who request
them for this purpose as long as they agree to make it clear to everyone
that it's really about Parkinson's Disease)

3. No Public Drunkeness

4. (There's some copper company with PD initials, but I forgot the name)

5. No Public Decency (I can only assume that this was the reading given
last night on the subway by the man across the aisle who began openly
masturbating soon after I sat down).

6. No pretentious demagoguery

and my favorite response:
7. My name is Pam Dunne and I've got to get one of those buttons!
This week a woman whose initials were PD turned out to be a teacher
who teaches health classes that include a segment on Parkinson's disease.
She and her colleagues took buttons as well as post cards for the kids
to sign and send in.
