Regarding a cheaper substitute for PET scanning, I believe you are
thinking about SPECT (Single-Photon-Emission Computed Tomography).
Don't know much about it but there are two articles (cited in CSR
APR 96) in Neurology, 1996;46:278-285 and 231-237. Said to be less
precise than PET, and still in early development, but already has
yielded some useful research results.
