There is no need for the spouse left at home to be improvished by their mate
going to a nursing home under Medicaid. Anyone so concerned should check
with an attorney or your local Department of Aging and check into the
Spousal Improvishment Act which allows the spouse at home to retain the
home, a car and approximatly $80,000 worth of other assets before any assets
are used to pay the Medicare for nursing home services. The spouse is also
allowed to have a minimal monthly income.

Anyone with a home, car and more than $80,000 worth of assets should be
willing to contribute to the care of the admitted spouse. As someone said
in their response, most of us are middle to lower income and probably don't
have much more that the allowable assets.
