Similar work has begun in gerontology. This conference will address key topics in the study of emotion as applied to aging and adult development. To provide cross-disciplinary contributions, points of view will be considered that are intrinsically relevant to biology, medicine, neuropsychology, developmental psychology, social psychology, sociology, and anthropology. The major focus will be on the emotional processes that are characteristic of the general adult and aging population. However, most emotional processes can operate in pathological ways in those who are in poor physical or mental health. Hence, we will consider the entire range of emotional function from typical normal behavior to emotional expression in pathological states. The conference will begin with an overview presentation to establish how emotion fits into the total system of person and environment, and how developmental issues should be articulated in this area. This will be followed by four topical sessions: Biopsychological Aspects of Emotion; Cognitive and Experiential Aspects of Emotion; Interpersonal and Social Aspects of Emotion; and Cultural and Environmental Contexts of Emotion. Each session will include a major overview and related research presentations, followed by extensive discussions. Papers Papers will not be available at the conference, but expanded versions of the presentations will be published as Volume 17 of the Annual Review of Gerontology and Geriatrics.
