test post four thanks for your patience. i think i'm getting somewhere. this first part is straight out of the mailer software, with the line length set to 70, same as post number three. the next part is copied and pasted from a plain ascii txt file, with no carriage returns in it except for new paragraphs. so the line breaks are being created by the mailer software, same as above.
