   SJS -
You wrote about your mother's swallowing problems. My mother (85 years),
who has had PD for about ten years also had extreme swallowing and "gag
reflex" problems a few years ago. She went through various mistaken
trials--including the prescription drug Reglan for the "gag reflex." We know
now that Reglan is a "no-no." It caused much worse Parkinson's symptoms.
She became completely immobile and slept most of the day.
What ended up working for her was (I don't know the proper terminology for
this)--putting a tube down her throat that then stretched the throat. She
has to chew her food more thoroughly than thorough. Dinner with Mother takes
about two hours, but the procedure worked. Before the procedure meal time
with Mother was very painful. She gagged on every other bite, and frequently
could not finish the meal.
I don't know that this would work for your mother, but it is worth asking
questions about. My heart goes out to you. I know the pain.
Love, Joan (55 years/PD for 7 years)
