Since the drugs ARE already approved by the FDA, and ARE already in use
nation-wide (and world-wide, presumably), IF they DO work in restoring some
brain function to those with certain disorders of the brain, why not just go
whole-hog and do a mass testing with several thousand persons having the
particlar brain disorders the drugs seem to work for?

It has been my understanding that once drugs are approved by the
FDA, doctors are free to prescribe them for whatever they feel will be
helpful. Prozac started out being used for clinical depression and I
believe that intended use was how it got its FDA approval. Doctors saw so
much success they started prescribing it for various types of dysthimia.
Noticing, for the most part, success at every turn, they prescribed it for
many other conditions. It is now commonly used for obsessive-compulsive
disorder (OCD) which is radically different from clinical depression.
There was no new FDA approval required for these various new uses.
