Re: place of residence--I agree with Henry that insome ways it doesn't matter, but I also think if folks put their location as part of the signature, as I've done, it helps in knowing how to respond to requests for resource contacts, etc. It's optional, but sometimes very useful, in tellingsomeone about a support group, agency, etc they may find useful.
