Good day PD List Members,
This is a periodic posting designed to provide some quick tips to
help folks control PD List Subscription option.

ListServ background:
A Listserv is just a program that allows one to mail a message to it
so that all who have subscribed can receive the same message. People have
to subscribe to receive the mail messages. The program has options that
allow subscribers to tailor the messages they receive or the subscription
options.
All of the Listservs I've used have a convention where one may find
out how to tailor their messages. The method to use is to send a message to
the Listserv (see below for the address), not the list (there's a
difference), with nothing more than "info refcard" in the body of the
message. Please note that the quote marks are not part of the command. The
Listserv program will send a return message with the program's reference
card listed.

ListServ Address:
First, please note that the list name is PARKINSN. Note that
there's no "o" near the end of the list name.
The ListServ Id and address is:
PD Listserv <[log in to unmask]>
Please note that the user Id for the ListServ is "listserv" (no
quotes) while the user Id for the Parkinson's List is "parkinsn" (again, no
quotes). All commands listed in this quick reference should be sent to the
listserv Id.

Commands:
Each and every ListServe subscriber has the authority and
responsibility to tailor our own Listserv sessions. Any person who chooses
can alter their subscription options. The following are the most often used
actual commands used to control subscriptions. Each command is preceded by
a brief explanation of the command.
1). Set subscription option to digest. This is where a single message
consisting of all individual messages is delivered to the subscriber.

2). Set subscription option to nodigest. This is where individual
messages will be delivered to the subscriber from the ListServ.
set parkinsn nodigest
3). Set subscription to no receive no mail for a period of time.
Typically used when going on vacation or some other temporary "out of
pocket" event.
set parkinsn nomail
4). Set subscription to receive mail after a period of not receiving
mail. Undoes the nomail option.
set parkinsn mail
5). Signoff as a subscriber. This removes a subscriber's name from the
subscriber list so that mail is permanently discontinued. Would be used to
permanently leave the PD List or should be used if changing IPs (Internet
Providers) and getting a new eMail address.

6). Subscribe to the PD List. Used to initially establish a
subscription on the PD List.

7). Get list of active subscribers. Might want an individual's personal
email address to send a personal message. This command gives a list of all
subscribers along with each's eMail address.
rev parkinsn
8). Determine subscription options. Used to find out what options are
currently in affect.

Message Format:
When controlling subscription options, place the ListServ address in
the "To:" field of the mail message (no quotes). There need not be a
subject, but one can be added if desired. In the body of the message, place
the desired command, starting in column 1, nothing more. As stated earlier,
a ListServ is nothing more than a computer program that is able to
understand a finite list of commands or verbs. When it encounters an
unexpected verb, it will reject the message.

Unexpected mail failures:
At times one may receive mail failures when attempting to post a
message to the PD ListServ. The first place to look is in your own back
yard. When one subscribes to the list, the ListServ program stores the IP
(Internet Protocol) Address from which the subscription message was sent
and uses it to verify that you are authorized to post messages. If you have
changed your IP Address in any way, any message sent to the ListServ will be
returned with a mail failure. To fix this, re-subscribe and send a message
to Barbara Patterson <[log in to unmask]> that lists the old IP
Address so that it may be deleted from the subscription list.
If there have been no changes to your IP Address, forward the failed
mail message to Barbara Patterson <[log in to unmask]> so that she
may analyze it to determine the cause.
