Just back from a visit to Mom's neuro, who has put her on zyprexa (olanzapine; made by Lilly) for paranoia, etc. It's supposed to have fewer side effects than clozaril. In particular, it doesn't affect the white blood cells like clozaril does, so the frequent blood tests needed with clozaril are not required.

It will take several days at least for any effect to be noticed. Diane McH, was it your dad who started on this a week or two ago? How's he doing?

I found some info, not much, at http://www.telpress.it/telpress/two.htm#12. Achim - this said that the drug was cleared by the EU Sept 23 to be used for schizophrenia. In the US, doctors can, as I understand it, prescribe for _any_ reason once a drug is approved -- that is, it can be used for conditions other than those on which the original approval was based. Don't know if this is true in the EU as well.
