Excerpt from the December 1996 Parkinson's Action Network "Action Reporter", an Advocacy Report for the Parkinson's Community- What Can You Do Before 105th Congress commences in January? Here's What! There is plenty of work that can be done before the commencement of the 105th Congress. Whether they were or were not co-sponsors in the 104th Congress, or if they are newly elected this year, every Member of the House and Senate should be made aware of the need for Parkinson's research legislation and the history of the Udall bill. They should be ready to sign on as soon as possible. FORMER CO-SPONSORS SHOULD BE URGED TO MAKE A PARKINSON'S BILL A HIGH PRIORITY FOR ACTION IN EARLY 1997. All others should be told the story: -- The promise of Parkinson's research, and the terrible disparity in federal research funding. -- The historic passage of the Udall bill in the Senate. -- The overwhelming bipartisan support in the 104th Congress, including 62 out of 100 Senators and 241 out of 435 Representatives co-sponsoring, which continues in the 105th. -- The need for them to help lead the effort in the 105th congress as a champion of Parkinson's research. PAN can help by providing information about election results, past co-sponsor status of reelected members, materials and information for contacting new Members, and other resources.
