"The Opiates of Optimism" from "The Joy of Working" by Denis Waitley.

A positive mental attitude is one of the single most important traits toward
achieving health and happiness. The body produces a natural morphinelike
substances called endorphins that reduce the experience of pain and screen
out unpleasant stimuli. The presence of endorphins actually cause the
feeling of well being. We can actually stimulate the production of
endorphins through optimistic thoughts and a positive attitude.

Here are 4 steps to a better attitude!

1. Avoid pessimists. Misery loves company. Negative thinking poisons the
atmosphere. It's dangerous to the spirit as well as to the body. The best
way to remain optimistic is to associate with other positive thinkers.

2. Stimulate the production of endorphins in your body by thinking positive
thoughts. You'll be surprised how good you feel.

3. Don't be a "grudge collector". Too many people spend too much time
every day thinking of past hurts. They imagine vividly in their minds every
grudge. Use instead your excellent mind and superior ability to self-image,
to create scenes of positive, pleasing emotions.

4. "Try" to wake up happy. Optimism is a learned attitude. Start thinking
positively early in the day. If the alarm sets your nerves jangling, wake
up to music. Avoid listening to the morning news. It's invariably
depressing. Listen instead to an all music radio station or to your
favorite tape cassettes on your way to work.
