Baltimore - Speaking at the annual conference of the Council for
the Advancement of Science Writing, Dr. Solomon H. Snyder, a researcher
at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, reported that drugs
developed to aid organ transplants also may promote the regrowth of
nerves. Among the diseases that may prove treatable are Alzheimer's,
Parkinson's, ALS, MD, and MS. Two promising compounds, proteins known
as FKBP and GPI 1046, have been tested favorably on rats and are present-
ly being tested on monkeys. If these results are favorable, tests on
human patients will follow.
