Flame war: Exchanging personal attacks using electronic mail, news groups,
or real time communications. (Simple definition.)

How they get started: Usually someone takes offense at an opinion which was
not intended to be taken personally or which differs from their own and
replies in a visious or argumentative tone or by making personal comments
about the author of the original opinion.

How to prevent or stop them:
Take a few hours to think about your response. Give yourself time to cool
off.
Don't take opinions personally. Often, the opinions expressed are not
intended as personal attacks.
Do not make personal comments about people who's opinions differ from your
own.
If you seriously object to something someone else has said, reply to that
person privately not using a public forum.
Don't respond at all. It's an old saying, but true..."it takes two to make
an argument'.
