Stress can have an effect on many things that are processed by the
stomach and intestines. Initial digestion takes place in the
stomach, but nothing is absorbed there. The stomach is connected to
the duodenum where secondary digestion takes place. The pylorus
sphincter controls the flow between the stomach and the duodenum. It
remains closed until the contents have been properly pre-digested.

Stress, for some reason, causes the pylorus sphincter to remain
closed for a much longer time than normal. This is why stress causes
ulcers, the digestive acids are in the stomach much longer than they
should be and so eventually eat away the lining. It also means that
oral medication that is supposed to be absorbed into the bloodstream
isn't, since the absorbtion doesn't take place until the smalll
intestine is reached. In the mean-time, the stomach acid can nullify
the effect of the medication.

(BTW, this is also why you don't want to drink while under stress.
The alcohol collects in the stomach were it is not absorbed and
since there is therefor no effect the person will often keep
drinking. Eventually the pylorus sphincter relaxes and all that
alcohol hits the small intestine where it is rapidly absorbed.
Result, the subject goes from cold sober to dead drunk in a matter
of minutes.}
