I am 32 and am writing on behalf of my mother who is 68 and was
"officially" diagnosed by a neurologist last Friday with PD (this after
going to numerous doctors during the past year or so). Her symptoms
include tremors in her hands and feet, difficulty in writing, slow
movements (she has difficulty getting her feet to move), and occasional
falling. She finds that she is very "top heavy," in that if she leans
forward to pick something up, make her bed, or tries to tie her shoes, she
will fall. In addition, on downward slopes she has difficulty slowing down
(she gets on a roll and keeps on moving).

The neurologist she saw prescribed Eldepryl for her. However, her
insurance company does not cover it and the pharmacy charges $145 for a
1-month supply. Can anyone tell me why it's not covered? The insurance
company said they will cover Senegiline and the only difference is in the
type of capsule. My mother is currently taking Zestril for high blood
pressure, and Pravacol for her cholesterol. Any advice you can offer
regarding the medication, alternatives, and combining PD medications
w/Zestril and Pravacol is appreciated.

Finally, my parents are moving next week into a home w/a combined
bath/shower. Up until now they've been fortunate in that they have a
separate bath and walk-in shower (my father is partially paralyzed due to a
stroke). They're concerned about how they will get in and out of the tub
to take a shower since they both have difficulty lifting their legs into
the air (especially my mother). Any suggestions?

Thanks for your help in advance.

Sincerely,

Joye Hunter ([log in to unmask])
