Last June,the Israeli Parkinson Support Group organized a very successful four day seminar at the Eden-Inn Hotel in Zichron Yaakov along the Mediteranean Sea south of Haifa.It included lectures,various types of therapy,recreational,and social activities.The group has published a description in English of the activities that took place.The United Parkinson Foundation,833 West Wahington Blvd.,Chicago,IL 60607,Tel:312-733-1893,has published an account of this vacation seminar in their 1996 Newsletter,#4,Part 2 based on an interview with Dr. Nir Giladi,who serves as a cosultant to the Israel Parkinson Support group,and is head of the Parkinson's Dept.at Ichilov Hospital in Tel Aviv. On December 23,1996,Dr. Nir Giladi gave a tutorial lecture on PD in Jerusalem.Some of the noteworthy subjects he discussed are: -Use of the "PET Scan" as a diagnostic tool for measuring dopamine concentration in the brain.PET refers to "position emission tomography". PET scan imaging technology is being used at Hadassah Hospital, Ein Kerem. Has anyone recently searched the PD archives on PET Scan? -Genetic and environmental factors in PD -He emphasized the importance of nondrug treatments of PD:the importance of being active,family encouragement,memory stimulation,morale, leg strengthening,maintaining a feeling of healthiness,walking continuosly for 45 minutes a day,daily PD exercises. -Dealing with depression -PD Surgery(Deep brain stimulation,Transplantation,Pallidotomy, Thaladotomy,Sub-Thaladotomy). -PD medications, their side-effects and side-effects treatment. -Hallucinations and nightmares induced by drug therapy. -PD is not just a movement disorder.It also can cause memory loss, and other body malfunctions. -PD research in Israel(At Teva Pharmaceuticals,Hadassah and Ichilov Hospitals).
