Perhaps those who have trouble with cramps in the calf of the
leg can benefit from a simple device used here at Southeast Missouri
University. It is used by athletes and others here and was
"designed" by the former head athletic trainer here: Red Williams.
The device is a simple 45 degree angle platform that the person
stands on with the toes at the top of the "slope." By leaning
forward you can stretch the calf muscles and relieve the cramp. Red
has built several platforms with different angles of slope. The
platform is placed facing a wall so that the wall can be used as a
support by the "standee." You can get the same effect by standing
on a step with your heels hanging out in space; slowly lower your
weight back over your heels (hang on to the railing) until you feel
the stretch in the calf muscles. Do not bounce up and down; you
should just have a long easy stretch. Margaret Mates
