Summary of information I have gathered from a variety of printed sources: (assuming possibility of wheelchair access) 1. DOORS and entry Rise for a ramp entry should be no more than 1" rise per 12" length. double entry doors are a plus all doors minimum 32" wide -- 36 " width preferable minimum 4 2" width on halls allowed for turning wheelchair - prefer 46-48" width pocket, sliding, bifold doors seem preferable to ordinary hinged door on interior bathroom should have 60" turnaround space 2. Hardware and locks consider push button numbered, numbered code locks at entry doors (or credit card type insert) lever type door handles handrails by tub and stool in bathroom 3. Windows Casement style windows with lever or crank action are easier to open than those that lift or slide open 4. Floor covering vinyl flooring with non-slip finish tile flooring with non-slip finish avoid area rugs avoid changes in height of flooring surfaces 5. Wiring Outlets 24 inches from floor Consider dimmer switches in bedrooms, hallways and baths that could then be used as nightlights. 6. Faucets U shaped or single handle operation are suggested 7. Bedroom sizes: 3 feet minimum clearance beside bed for wheelchair access and ease of turning 8. Fire safety Smoke detectors can be hard wired into house wiring instead of battery operated. 9. Showers consider a permanent wall of glass blocks in lieu of shower curtain...allows light and is safety feature consider space for bath stool consider hand held shower head
