Just to state how much I admire both Kathy and Russ's analysis of this false debate. There is no question in my own mind that the textbook producers and testing institutes have formed an alliance to support a very reductive version of phonics. Whole Language always incorporated a partial phonics approach but try telling that to the parents' groups. I spend a lot of time these days shaking my head in disbelief at the idiocy of all levels of government. Catherine F.
