I just sent this privately to Roberta, but since there has been a request that this info be shared, here is my post. Also, don't forget the archives. This is our experience--better check further re: morphine ,etc. ----------------------------Original message---------------------------- Date: Sat, 08 Feb 97 11:12:05 EST From: Camilla Flintermann <[log in to unmask]> Subject: Surgery To: Roberta <[log in to unmask]> Hi-- as for pain meds, Peter was told that Tylenol was OK, and he had it when we had to stop the Percocet. Basically it is our understanding that ANY OPIATE will compete with the meds for the dopamine receptors in the brain. We also were warned to tell the anesthesiologist to avoid Fentenyl. Be aware too that telling them--even putting it inthe record--doesn't end the need for vigilance--there have been scary tales on thelist about how instructions get overlooked. If you can be "wife at bedside", andare armed with the facts, that's the best option. The Eldepryl should be given time to get out of his system--2 wks? ask pharmacist/neuro--if there's any chance he may be given Demerol. Good for you to be checking in advance--CGs are the first line of defense!
