Email received from Senator Bob Kerrey: Subj: Re: Request to Cosponser Bill Date: Tue, Feb 11, 1997 6:56 PM EDT From: [log in to unmask] X-From: [log in to unmask] (Bobs Mailbox) To: [log in to unmask] Dear Mrs. Weeks: Thank you for contacting me to express your support for the "Morris Udall Parkinson's Education and Research Act." I certainly understand your concern for this issue. During the 104th Congress, I was an original cosponsor of the Udall legislation. I agree with the general premise behind its proposal, that substantial life saving gains, as well as cost savings, may be attained through medical research. Unfortunately, the 104th Congress adjourned prior to considering Senator Hatfield's bill. However, similar legislation will again be introduced during the 105th Congress, and I am hopeful that it will be considered by the full Senate. I anticipate supporting this proposal again this year. Advancements in medical research offer hope to millions of Americans suffering from disease and debilitating disorders. This is particularly true for the 20 million people afflicted with one of the 5,000 rare diseases on which little or no research has yet been conducted. The promise of medical research is extremely important for these individuals. Medical research also offers a practical means for controlling skyrocketing health care costs. Research is a key link in our strategy to control costs, whereas, a cure is the ultimate goal. Thank you again for taking the time to contact me. It is very helpful for me to hear from constituents sharing their real life experiences. Sincerely, Bob Kerrey
